I want to give Geoff Hobson some props for starting a virtual Bengals Hall of Fame on Bengals.com. In my opinion, this is long overdue. There have been many great players that have played in Cincinnati over the years and they should be celebrated more. Since only one Bengals player has ever made the Hall of Fame, Anthony Munoz, I think the organization should honor the guys who haven't gotten the recognition from the NFL, by having their own HOF. What Geoff Hobson is doing is a great first step, but it should be followed up with a Ring of Honor at Paul Brown Stadium, or something on Game Days that remind the fans and current players that there is a football tradition here in Cincinnati. Believe it or not, the Bengals have been to a Super Bowl. As a matter of fact, they have been to two of them.
Bengals fans know that, I know that, but I will bet(5 bucks) that most of the young players on the team don't know that. I just thought of this while I was blogging this piece right here. I said to myself, "I wonder if Pat Sims knows who Tim Krumrie is, or Coy Bacon?" There are many other former Bengals players I could substitute for Krumrie. And I was just using Pat Sims as an example. I like Pat very much and I think he is the kind of player that respects older players so that's why I used his name.
I remember playing in Chicago in 2005 and before they introduced the Bears players, the Jumbo Tron played a clip of the Bears great players and moments. I'm sitting there like wow! It got me fired up just seeing that and it made beating them that much better. We have that here in Cincy now before player introductions at PBS. They play still images of everyone from Paul Brown to Corey Dillon. And to be honest, I always make my way to the front of the tunnel to make sure I see it before we come out. It's the one pregame ritual that fires me up. I love watching old Bengals clips.
Here is some info that I just found out by looking on the Internet....
AFC Champs
1981
1988
AFC Central Champs
1970
1973
1981
1988
1990
AFC North Champs
2005
I knew about the 1981, 1988, 2005 teams, but didn't know the rest. I must say, individual banners for each accomplishment on the walls at PBS for players, fans, and opposing teams to see would look pretty nice and it would make a state of the art stadium look even better on game days. But....winning cures all and I know that.
